Fall 2009 Filipino Martial Arts Final (Defensive Knife Postures)

Fall 2009 Filipino Martial Arts Final (Defensive Knife Postures) Here is the final test for our fall class of Filipino Martial Arts… We’ve worked on knife techniques, drills, and tactics for the past month. Time to apply everything we’ve learned… Our method focuses more on unarmed defense since that is the most likely scenario one will encounter in reality. We emphasize weapon hand control to minimize damage taken in. If the weapon hand is controlled, it is much easier to counter with one’s own technique. Equipment: Safety Glasses 2 Cold Steel double-edge training rubber knives 1 Shock Knife No Face shots (due to liability issues) Disarms take away 3 damage points Weapon control (3 second hold of attacker’s weapon hand by defender) takes away 4 damage points Round 1 is the defensive section broken down into two 15 second segments. A real knife encounter will last less than 10 secs. We made it 15 to allow for more “playing” time. Each participant gets a turn being armed and unarmed. Stabs and slashes count for one damage point, and the person with the least knife damage points wins that round. Round 2 focuses on the offensive part of handling a knife, and is comprised of one round wherein both participants each have a knife. Damage is counted by two officials.
